Did you know that most insurance plans cover nutritional counseling? This is often the case EVEN if you don’t have an actual diagnosis and still want to come in for preventative care.

Check to see if your insurance policy will cover the visits! Simply call the 800 number on the back of your insurance card and ask to speak with a representative.

Mention that sessions will be done through Telehealth, ask if you need a diagnosis, or have a copay and you are all set!

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my insurance plan cover nutrition sessions?

  • When calling insurance they will typically ask for a CPT code. You can provide them with the code for Medical Nutrition Therapy - 97802 & 97803. If you are not covered with those codes NEXT ask them to check your coverage for CPT codes: 99401, 99402, 99403 and 99404.

Do I need a diagnosis for coverage?

  • To ensure coverage, ask your rep if you need a diagnosis code. If so you can ask if they cover Z71.3 (Dietary counseling and surveillance for preventative care)

  • If you are not covered with this diagnosis then provide them with Z72.4

  • You may be covered if you have any of the following diagnosis:

    • Overweight (BMI 25-30) or obese (BMI over 30+)

    • Pre-diabetes or diabetes

    • High blood pressure/hypertension

    • High cholesterol

Is there a limit of number of sessions?

  • Please ask your rep how many sessions you have per calendar year. Depending on the company the number of visits vary from 0 to unlimited depending on medical need. Please inform them these sessions will be through telehealth.

Do I have a copay?

  • Dietitians are considered specialists so usually your copay is listed on the front of your insurance card. You can confirm with your insurance rep how much you will owe. There are certain occasions like preventative care where co-pays may be waived.
