Crispy Orange Teriyaki Tofu 2 ways

If you are not too sure about tofu, that's ok! You don't have to eat it for optimal health. Choose other plant sources of protein to add into your weekly mix like lentils, beans, nuts/seeds, and high protein grains like quinoa, freekah, bulgur, amaranth, and teff.

As for cooking tofu, to get it crispy, and meat-like, drain liquid from tofu package. Wrap tofu block in a clean towel. Using a book or a heavy pan, press tofu to remove liquid for at least 20 mins (but can be done for several hours).

If you have an air fryer I highly recommend you use it for tofu. Unwrap the tofu block and cut into cubes (~32 cubes - 8 cubes per serving ~ 100 calories).

Crispy Orange Teriyaki Tofu

Ingredients:

  • Tofu, drained and cut into cubes

  • 2 tsp Turmeric + black pepper

  • 2 tsp cumin

  • 1 Tbsp garlic powder

  • 2 tsp ginger

  • Sea salt to taste

  • 1 whole orange

  • 1-2 tsp fresh ginger

  • 3 Tbsp teriyaki sauce (Whole Foods 365 is low in sodium, calories, and organic)

  • 1 Tbsp coconut secret aminos

Directions:

  1. Toss cubed tofu into a glass container (that has a lid). In a small bowl mix together spices (turmeric, black pepper, cumin, garlic, ginger, sea salt). Add spice mix to container with tofu. Place lid on container. Shake until tofu is evenly covered with spices.

  2. Place tofu in air fryer for 8-12 minutes on 400 degrees F or until crisp. (If you do not own an air fryer you can bake in the oven for about 25-30 mins (flip half way) on 400 degrees F.

  3. While the tofu is cooking, blend orange and fresh ginger until smooth.

  4. Place a large pan on stove top on high heat. Add teriyaki and coconut secret. Add in orange and ginger puree. Reduce heat to simmer and stir every minute or so until sauce thickens.

  5. Add in tofu. Cook for about 5 minutes.

Serve in a bun with pickles or with sticky rice + caul-irice, and sautéed veggies!
